Keeping your teeth and gums healthy may have additional advantages for the health of your brain, according to a preliminary study.
Preliminary research reveals those who are genetically predisposed to poor dental health may be more likely to exhibit indicators of deteriorating brain health. This research is scheduled to be presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference next week.
The researchers claim that more studies, including clinical trials, and a more diverse subject pool are needed because the results are preliminary.
What was unclear, according to study author Dr. Cyprien Rivier, a postdoctoral fellow in neurology at the Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut, was whether poor oral health affected brain health or the functional status of a person’s brain, which we are now better able to understand using neuroimaging tools like magnetic resonance imaging or MRI.
Studying oral health is crucial since it is a frequent occurrence and a risk factor that is simple to change. Everyone may successfully improve their oral health with little effort and expense.
According to the association, high blood pressure is one condition that is associated with gum disease and other oral health difficulties.
For the most recent study, researchers examined 40,000 adults who had registered in the U.K. Biobank, a biomedical database, between 2014 and 2021.
The average age of the adults was 57, and 46 percent of them were male. None of them had a stroke history.
The individuals were tested for 105 genetic variations that increased the risk of developing cavities, missing teeth, or the need for dentures in later life.
Additionally, they used MRI to check the participants for indicators of poor breath health.
The study’s findings revealed a 24% rise in white matter hyperintensities, or accumulated damage to the brain’s white matter that can impair cognition, balance, and movement, in people who were genetically predisposed to poor oral health.
The proportion of the brain’s “fine architecture” that has altered in comparison to a healthy adult of comparable age was affected by individuals with poor oral health by 43%, according to the study.
“It is still good advice to pay attention to oral hygiene and health. However, since people with poor brain health are likely to be less attentive to good oral health compared to those with normal brain health, it is impossible to prove cause and effect.
It is nevertheless wise to pay attention to your dental health and cleanliness. It is impossible to show cause and effect, however, because persons with poor brain health are likely to pay less attention to good oral health than those with normal brain health.
Additionally, genetic risk factors for other chronic health disorders including diabetes, hypertension, stroke, infections, etc. that are known to be linked to brain imaging indicators may overlap with genetic risk factors for oral health risk.
The study’s shortcomings, such as the fact that the Biobank only contains people from the United Kingdom, were addressed by the researchers.
Since 94% of Biobank members are white, the researchers argue that more study including individuals from diverse racial and cultural origins is necessary.
