Saudi Arabia is taking a significant step forward in artificial intelligence (AI) by establishing the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics (ICAIRE) in Riyadh.
The center, announced by Saudi Minister of Culture Prince Badr Bin Farhan at the 42nd session of UNESCO’s General Conference in Paris, aims to promote ethical practices in AI development and contribute to advancing AI policies in the Gulf region.
The initiative, approved by Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, seeks to enhance expertise and establish robust legislative frameworks for AI and other cutting-edge technologies. The proposal for ICAIRE was initially presented to UNESCO in March 2022 and received support from Kuwait and Oman. Operating with legal autonomy and financial and administrative independence, the center will foster the growth of advanced technologies like AI within the Kingdom.
Saudi Arabia’s embrace of AI is expected to yield substantial economic benefits. A global consultancy firm, PwC, reports projects that AI will contribute a staggering $135 billion to the Saudi economy by 2030, positioning the Kingdom as the primary beneficiary of technology in the Middle East.
In a recent interview, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella lauded Saudi Arabia’s efforts to harness the power of AI, emphasizing its potential to boost productivity and empower small businesses. The establishment of ICAIRE further underscores the Kingdom’s commitment to responsible AI development and its vision to become a global leader in AI innovation.
