The United Arab Emirates National Chess Team won both the men’s and women’s team competitions at the 15th Pan Arab Games, now being held in Algeria. As a result of their victories, the UAE was awarded the first two gold medals of the competition.
Players on the men’s side included Salem Abdul Rahman, Omar Noman, Abdul Rahman Al-Taher, Othman Musa, and Ammar Al-Sidrani. On the women’s side, players included Kholoud Issa Al Zarouni, Rawdat Issa Al Serkal, Wafia Darwish Al Maamari, Ahlam Rashid, and Anoud Issa.
An earlier competition saw the men’s cycling team win a bronze medal. This was the team’s first time competing in a tournament.
The United Arab Emirates players have now accumulated nine medals from the competition, including two gold and seven bronze medals.
