The Dubai Health Authority (DHA) has unveiled a significant development in the emirate’s health security infrastructure by introducing a Disaster and Crisis Management Office as part of its organizational framework. This initiative aims to bolster the health sector’s readiness and capabilities to respond effectively to emergencies and crises.
Mission and Responsibilities
The primary objective of the newly established office is to elevate the health sector’s readiness, augment its capacities, and equip it to manage any emergency effectively. It will oversee developing and managing emergency, crisis, and disaster systems, along with other tasks to fortify community health security.
Announcement and Participation
This transformative initiative was announced during the International Conference and Exhibition for Relief and Development (Dihad), where leaders from various health institutions, scientists, doctors, experts, and specialists from the UAE and abroad convened. This move underscores Dubai’s commitment to enhancing its preparedness for potential health emergencies and crises.
Advanced Capabilities and Support
The Disaster and Crisis Management Office will be supported by an advanced center and an internationally accredited program, enhancing its capability to handle health disasters and emergencies effectively. This includes the Operations and Control Center, which is equipped with state-of-the-art electronic and intelligent systems for disaster and crisis management. Additionally, the Dubai Disaster and Crisis Medicine Programme, which recently obtained international accreditation, will play a crucial role in strengthening the emirate’s prevention and health security system.
Objectives for the Future
Over the next five years, the Dubai Disaster and Crisis Medicine Programme aims to enhance the skills and experiences of 10,000 government and private hospital leaders, medical professionals, technical support, and nursing staff in Dubai. The Disaster and Crisis Management Office will focus on laying down strategies to enhance Dubai’s global preparedness ranking, develop and manage the system of health emergencies, and implement preventive and proactive measures to address disasters and emergencies. It will also prioritize the training and qualification of specialists and the preparation of scientific research and forecasting studies to anticipate future challenges. Establishing the Disaster and Crisis Management Office reflects Dubai’s commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring a robust response to unforeseen health emergencies or crises.
