Japan’s agricultural, fisheries, and forestry product exports reached a historic milestone in 2023, totaling a record 1.45 trillion yen. This achievement marks the 11th consecutive year of growth, although the rate was significantly lower compared to the previous year due to various challenges faced by the industry.
Challenges and Impact on Growth
China’s import ban notably impacted the export growth of Japanese marine products due to concerns over treated radioactive wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant. This ban resulted in declining sales to mainland China, dropping maritime product shipments by 29.9%. Despite this setback, China remained Japan’s top export destination, albeit with a 14.6% decline in purchases compared to the previous year.
Shifts in Export Patterns
Despite the challenges posed by the Chinese ban, Japan witnessed significant shifts in its export patterns. While sales to mainland China declined, increased shipments to the United States and Hong Kong helped offset this decrease. Notably, scallop exports to the United States saw a sharp increase, indicating successful efforts by exporters to explore new markets.
Emerging Opportunities and Growth Sectors
Amidst the challenges, specific sectors experienced remarkable growth in exports. Sales of pearls surged by 92.0%, driven by growing demand in Hong Kong following a trade fair. Similarly, green tea exports saw a 33.3% rise, supported by increasing demand in the United States and Europe.
Government Initiatives and Future Goals
In response to the challenges faced by the industry, the Japanese government is actively supporting businesses in establishing new sales routes and strengthening supply systems. These efforts align with the government’s ambitious targets of raising annual agricultural and seafood exports to 2 trillion yen by 2025 and 5 trillion yen by 2030. Despite the current hurdles, Japan remains committed to expanding its agricultural and fisheries exports on the global stage.
