India’s Tata group and France’s Airbus have inked an agreement to collaborate on manufacturing civilian helicopters, as announced during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to India. This partnership marks a significant step towards enhancing aerospace manufacturing capabilities and strengthening bilateral ties between India and France.
Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra confirmed the agreement, highlighting the collaboration between Tata and Airbus to produce H125 helicopters with a substantial indigenous and localization component. This strategic industrial partnership underscores the commitment to fostering local manufacturing expertise while leveraging global technological capabilities.
Airbus disclosed plans to establish a final assembly line (FAL) for helicopters, with production expected to commence in 2026 after a 24-month setup period. The helicopters manufactured through this collaboration will cater to India’s domestic market and be exported to neighboring countries, bolstering regional aerospace capabilities and connectivity.
Defence Sector Cooperation
During President Macron’s visit, discussions encompassed further cooperation in the defense sector, including potential collaboration with French engine maker Safran for manufacturing fighter jet engines in India.
