Volkswagen has unveiled plans to integrate ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot developed by OpenAI, into its vehicles equipped with the IDA voice assistant. The German automaker aims to roll out this feature, based on Cerence’s Chat Pro product and OpenAI’s large language model, starting in Europe in the second quarter. The chatbot will initially be available in Volkswagen’s line of electric vehicles, including ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.3, as well as in new models like Tiguan, Passat, and Golf. The chatbot, integrated into the IDA voice assistant, is designed to enhance conversations, answer queries, and provide vehicle-specific information. While the United States is currently not slated for this feature, Volkswagen is considering its inclusion, pending internal approvals. The move follows Mercedes-Benz’s integration of ChatGPT into its MBUX infotainment system last year. Clarence and Volkswagen plan to explore further collaboration for a new, large language model-based user experience for Volkswagen’s next-generation in-car assistant.
