Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the 42nd edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair (SIBF), organized by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA). The fair is themed “We Speak Books” and is set to run until November 12.
Distinguished Guests:
Prominent figures, including Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and Sheikh Sultan Bin Ahmed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, the Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, attended the inauguration ceremony. Notable guests also included Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, the Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, along with other high-ranking officials.
Highlighting the Importance of the Arabic Language:
During his speech at the opening ceremony, Sheikh Dr. Sultan emphasized the significance of the Arabic language, tracing its roots back to Adam (PBUH) as the language God endowed upon him. He also discussed the Historical Corpus of the Arabic Language, an extensive project aimed at preserving and disseminating the Arabic language’s history.
Addressing Linguistic Origins:
Sheikh Dr. Sultan delved into the origins of languages and their connections, presenting evidence that Arabic is the mother of many world languages. He highlighted the need to correct historical inaccuracies related to the study of languages.
Protecting and Promoting Arabic Language:
Sheikh Dr. Sultan revealed his efforts in creating a dictionary of world languages to explore the connections between languages and confirm the Arabic language’s role as the source of many. His goal is to protect and promote the Arabic language.
Honouring Ibrahim Al-Koni:
The renowned Libyan writer and novelist Ibrahim Al-Koni was named the ‘Cultural Personality of the Year’ at SIBF 2023 and was honoured during the ceremony.
Recognition for Translation:
Swiss publisher Unions Verlag was acknowledged with the 7th Sharjah Translation Award, ‘Turjeman,’ for translating Raja Alem’s novel, “The Dove’s Necklace.”
Global Participation:
The 42nd edition of SIBF features a wide array of publishers from 109 countries and over 1.5 million titles on display, making it a prominent global event for culture and literature.
Cultural Exchange:
The event highlights the exchange of cultures, histories, and values worldwide, bringing together authors, publishers, and intellectuals.
Sheikh Dr. Sultan’s Tour:
Following the opening ceremony, Sheikh Dr. Sultan toured the fair, visiting the pavilions of different countries and local entities and discussing the contributions of Sharjah in the literary and cultural realms.
