In light of the ‘Year of Sustainability’ celebrations and preparations for hosting COP28 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Zayed University’s innovative sustainability program is seeing an outstanding increase in demand. The Bachelor of Science in Sustainability program has had a significant 140% surge in admissions, more than doubling in size. The impending COP28 in the United Arab Emirates is driving this trend, highlighting the growing awareness of job options in sustainability.
A Plan for an Ecological Future
The premier university in the United Arab Emirates, Zayed University, launched the Bachelor of Science in Sustainability program just a year ago, and it is currently accepting applications for its second class of students. With a focus on technology, business, and policy, this cutting-edge program gives students the diverse skills to address urgent domestic and global sustainability concerns.
The head of the sustainability program, Professor Suzanna ElMassah, said, “Young people today are passionate about the environment and aspire to build careers in sustainability.”
Three Focus Areas, One Objective
Three different concentrations are available in the curriculum: Sustainable Enterprise, Sustainable Policy, and Sustainable Environments enabling students to customize their education to their interests. These specializations are carefully crafted to give students the multidisciplinary expertise required in sustainability and particular subject matter knowledge.
Developing Upcoming Sustainability Leaders
Zayed University is dedicated to developing the next wave of sustainability leaders, according to Professor ElMassah. “Our mission is to empower students as knowledgeable and effective advocates for a greener future,” the speaker said.
Graduates of the program are anticipated to be key players in advancing the UAE’s efforts to achieve net-zero emissions, including programs to cut emissions, do away with single-use plastics, and create a truly circular economy.
COP28: An Activator for Ecological Education
Young people in the area are becoming increasingly interested in adopting sustainable practices and incorporating them into their daily lives due to the UAE’s planned hosting of COP28. Additionally, it has sparked a greater interest in vocations and education related to sustainability.
Engaging Students Actively
The Zayed University sustainability program’s current students took the lead in starting an active Sustainability Club. The purpose of this group is to prepare university students for the approaching COP28 and to increase awareness of climate action. Integrating academic knowledge with the corporate sector, the Sustainability Club engages students in creative sustainability practices and addresses pressing environmental challenges through various programs. This club is a prime example of the university’s dedication to developing a proactive, environmentally aware community of individuals prepared to take the lead in sustainability.
