An insightful company report delving into AI’s influence on the workforce, encompassing global English-language jobs, has unveiled compelling shifts. Notably, job listings for AI engineers witnessed a remarkable over twofold surge between April and June, establishing itself as the third-fastest-growing job category on the platform.
Karim Kimbrough, Chief Economist at LinkedIn, highlighted the rationale behind this trend, emphasizing that as businesses continually seek methods to enhance productivity and drive revenue, the demand for individuals proficient in leveraging emergent AI tools is becoming increasingly pronounced.
Diverse Opportunities in AI Roles and Compensation
The growing demand for AI-related roles has led to various opportunities, some of which carry substantial compensation. For instance, a Netflix role focusing on AI product management offers a staggering annual salary of $900,000. Such high earning potential has spurred job seekers’ interest in these domains.
Generative-AI Job Market Expansion: A Growing Phenomenon
As observed on the platform Indeed, the number of job postings in the generative-AI sector experienced a remarkable 50% rise between July 2022 and July 2023, based on data shared with Insider. However, job searches in this realm demonstrated an even more dramatic increase, soaring by an astonishing 12,300% over the same period. It’s worth noting that both the figures grew from nearly negligible levels.
LinkedIn Profiles Undergo Transformation
In response to the evolving job landscape, LinkedIn users have strategically revamped their profiles to position themselves for these new AI-driven roles. The report highlighted a noteworthy development – since January, the frequency of generative AI keywords, such as “ChatGPT” or “prompt engineering,” on LinkedIn members’ profiles has experienced a consistent average monthly increase of 75%. Additionally, by June, the number of LinkedIn members boasting at least one AI skill surged ninefold compared to the data from 2016, spanning 25 countries.
Skills in Focus: The Growing Demand for AI Proficiency
The skillset required for AI roles often encompasses technical training and experience in computer science and statistics. The report also illuminated the top five fastest-growing AI-related skills featured on members’ profiles, including question answering (332% YoY growth), classification (43% increase), recommender systems (40% growth), computer vision (32% surge), and natural language processing (19% expansion).
Balancing AI Advancements and Soft Skills
While the allure of AI-driven roles is significant, Karin Kimbrough underlined the enduring importance of soft skills. Despite the evolving technological landscape, executives and company leadership continue to prize qualities like management, communication, customer service, leadership, and teamwork. A LinkedIn survey revealed that 92% of US executives recognize the increasing importance of people skills.
The Future of Skills: A Hybrid Approach
With AI becoming an integral part of the professional landscape, Kimbrough offered two encouraging insights. Firstly, individuals without extensive AI expertise can harness technologies like ChatGPT to enhance productivity in their current and future roles. Secondly, while AI-related skills are gaining prominence, the significance of people skills still needs to be improved. Kimbrough predicted that remote and hybrid work models and AI integration would amplify the demand for human connection and soft skills.
