Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, made a significant stride in the realm of music creation on August 2nd with the launch of its suite of generative artificial intelligence (AI) models known as AudioCraft. The new suite, as detailed in a blog post, comprises two essential tools – MusicGen and AudioGen – that use text-based inputs to generate innovative audio compositions. Additionally, the suite features EnCodec, a cutting-edge tool that enables higher-quality music generation with fewer artifacts.
Meta emphasized that its MusicGen model was meticulously trained using music owned or “specifically licensed” by the company, an essential move considering the ongoing controversy surrounding AI training with copyrighted material. Meta is currently facing a copyright infringement lawsuit over AI training practices, highlighting the sensitivity of this issue across various artistic fields.
Meta has made MusicGen and AudioGen available in different sizes to the “research community” and developers to foster innovation and collaboration. The company envisions the future development of more advanced controls, ultimately making the models accessible and valuable to both music industry professionals and amateurs alike.
In a Cointelegraph interview, Harvey Mason Jr., the CEO of the Recording Academy, likened the emergence of AI-generated music to the transformative impact of synthesizers when they first graced the music scene. Meta’s AudioCraft AI models are poised to revolutionize music creation, opening up new possibilities for artists and composers to explore their creativity and produce innovative masterpieces.
This release comes on the heels of a similar move by Google, which recently launched MusicLM, a tool that converts text into music. The race to develop and deploy the most potent AI models has prompted tech giants like Meta, Google, and Microsoft to release new AI tools across various domains actively.
Notably, on August 1st, Meta introduced AI chatbots with distinct personalities, a fun product that serves as a search helper for users on its platforms. The company’s ongoing efforts to harness the potential of AI are evident, with the ultimate goal of revolutionizing user experiences and reshaping various industries. As AI technology continues to evolve, the realm of music creation stands poised for a groundbreaking transformation, enabling artists and music enthusiasts to explore uncharted territories and unlock new artistic horizons.
