A groundbreaking megaproject is underway in Sharjah, introducing a fresh chapter for the emirate. Named Aljada, this expansive 2.2-square-kilometer site, situated near the airport, universities, and the E311 motorway, is approximately 30% complete, with major features such as a mall and a business district still in the works.
However, even in its current state, Aljada is already abuzz with activity, attracting visitors from all over the UAE. The development, often called “the district,” boasts many attractions, including cafes, a farmers’ market, outdoor cinema, restaurants, supermarkets, skateparks, bike paths, and even a shop dedicated to Emirati farm produce.
The journey to Aljada began in 2018, and despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, it has thrived. By the start of 2021, the first residents had moved into the homes, and it’s projected that by the end of 2023, 12,000 people will call this self-contained city their home.
The project’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its preservation of old ghaf trees, indigenous species lining the roads, and the creation of green spaces like parks, gyms, and pools. The development is designed to be a destination, offering a vibrant and inclusive community with many amenities.
Among the upcoming attractions is Sharjah’s largest gym, featuring an elevated running track and a trampoline park managed by Bounce. Most eagerly anticipated is the forthcoming mall, set to start construction next year. Renderings have shown futuristic curved buildings surrounding an observation deck and a “showpiece water feature,” creating a “wow” factor for visitors.
Additionally, Aljada aims to become Sharjah’s new commercial center, with its central business district comprising around 40 buildings connected by a “green spine” of trees and shaded pathways for outdoor meetings.
Arada, the venture behind Aljada, has attracted diverse investors thanks to the emirate’s shift towards offering freehold properties to all nationalities. Rising populations in Sharjah and neighboring Dubai have also boosted the project’s prospects.
Although the completion of Aljada is set for 2028, it has already become a symbol of transformation and growth for Sharjah. Inspired by the past but looking to the future, this ambitious project has a compelling story behind every aspect, and its progress is a testament to the passion and dedication of those involved.
