The Pakistani team won the entire championship after six preliminary rounds, three elimination rounds, and a grand final match versus South Korea. Zainab Hameed, Azeem Liaquat, and Ahmed Shujaan, the three competitors, were even included among the top 10 speakers during the competition.
The best speaker was Zainab, a student from Karachi Grammar School. Ahmed from Aitchison College placed sixth, while Azeem, a student at Salamat International Campus for Advanced Studies in Lahore, took second place.
Teams from 45 different nations and more than 200 contestants participated in the 18th edition of the International Debate Education Association (IDEA) Youth Forum, held in Mexico from July 2 to July 15.
The final debate’s topic was “Guantanamo Bay prison should be shut down right away.” While Team Korea could not demonstrate why the motion should not be adopted, the Pakistani team had the luxury of defending it.
The competition featured two distinct events: a team competition and a forum where debating participants were paired with individuals from different nations.
The general secretary of the Debating Society of Pakistan and the coach of team Pakistan, Daniyal Asad, congratulated the team on its success and noted that “it was the first time that Pakistan participated and also the first time that any team won with all nine votes of the judges in its favor.” Asad was also given the best coach/judge award.
