Lukas Sokol pointed out that Masdar City has integrated electric vehicles into its mobility infrastructure to promote its vision of a healthy, contemporary, and environmentally friendly city during a presentation titled: “Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Development in the Middle East.” In 2008, the city unveiled its rapid transit (PRT) electric vehicles, which run on an underground track from the North Car Park of the town to the podium, the city’s central business district. They were regarded as the first autonomous EVs that the public could access.
The first-generation PRT is referred to as the future’s history. It has carried over two million people throughout its 15 years of service.
At Masdar City, EV usage developed further. Navya, a second-generation PRT, transports passengers above a car-free podium that engages with the general population.
We’re continuing to look into PRT 3.0, which we’d like to see travel on major roads rather than just in Masdar City.
EVs are perfect for bright, multipurpose, neighborhood-based communities, according to Sokol.
“EVs are perfect for commuting to and from work, as well as for taking care of day-to-day needs given they can be charged at home,” the author writes. “However, given the challenges of charging en route, EVs may not be ideal for long road trips.”
Masdar City has kept its numerous corporate, academic, and residential assets nearby to promote walking, cycling, and scootering as vital transportation options, in addition to introducing PRT and being the first area in the world to provide Tesla with car-sharing through the Ekar app.
“A city instantly becomes more sustainable when it encourages walking as the primary mode of transportation. However, municipalities that wish to be innovative and sustainable need to take EVs into account because it may only be feasible for some cities to be walkable today, Sokol continued.
