The UAE has played a pivotal role in facilitating global aid to earthquake-hit Syria and Türkiye, as the natural disaster serves as a reminder for governments to boost their emergency response, Drز Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organisation (WHO), told the World Government Summit 2023.
In a virtual address, Ghebreyesus said the UAE, as a key humanitarian hub, helped WHO’s aid efforts in Syria and Türkiye, which have lately been struck with two devastating earthquakes that killed over 35,000 people and displaced thousands more.
“Over the past few days, we have dispatched three flights with medical supplies and surgical trauma kits to both countries from our logistics hub in Dubai,” Ghebreyesus said.
In his statement, he said that the hub in the UAE “is an increasingly significant aspect of WHO efforts around the world on emergency preparedness response and resilience.”
According to Ghebreyesus, the WHO has expanded its hub in Dubai tenfold since 2017. Since 2017, the WHO has shipped vital medical supplies from Dubai to 90 different nations.
He pleaded with international leaders to draw lessons from the COVID-19 epidemic, which exposed significant disparities between countries and a feeble global emergency response.
“Unfortunately, this epidemic and other major health emergencies won’t be the last. The frequency and severity of other dangers, such as climate change, will keep rising, according to the head of the WHO.
He continued, “We owe it to those we have lost and those who will follow us to learn from this pandemic and make the necessary reforms to keep the globe safer.
Ghebreyesus criticized nations for moving slowly to implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and urged them to do so in order to combat the world’s problems.
Through programs like the Government Accelerators Programme, which produces “faster effect through collaboration and innovation,” he complimented the UAE’s partnership and leadership in responding to a number of grave dangers.
The WHO director expressed optimism that the UAE’s hosting of COP28 will encourage greater dialogue about urgent global health issues.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), Antonio Guterres, emphasized the need of international cooperation in his virtual address to the WGS attendees.
Conflict is raging, poverty and hunger are increasing, and divides are getting greater, according to Guterres.
He cautioned governments against implementing short-term policies that put off addressing the major issues that face the world’s nations today, such as climate change, food hardship, and energy instability. In the end, he said, “it makes these problems more intractable.”
Governments must act with “the speed and scale that our fast-moving world demands,” but only with the help of the corporate sector, non-governmental groups, and the global community can true change be brought about.
Guterres continued, “We must cooperate for the larger good.”
More than 220 panel discussions with 300 speakers, including heads of state, ministers, top government officials, and thought leaders, will be held during the WGS 2023 to address important topics.
At the Summit, there are over 22 international forums evaluating the most important developments in key industries. The Future of Societies and Healthcare, Governing Economic Resilience and Connectivity, Prioritizing Learning and Work, Accelerating Development and Governance, Exploring the Frontiers, Global City Design and Sustainability, as well as interactive discussions and sessions around these six primary themes.
