The latest report card on the condition of education, released by the U.S. Department of Education this October, showed significant drops in math and reading test scores for fourth and eighth graders between 2019 and 2022, even with COVID-19 pandemic measures in place.
Analyzing the effects of learning loss and how to reverse it has been a major area of focus for Sang-Pil Han, an associate professor of information systems in the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University, whose research focuses on artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and educational technologies. At the height of the pandemic, Han quickly shifted to online learning.
Han and his co-authors describe their research utilizing QANDA, a Mathpresso Inc. AI-based learning tool, in a recent academic paper. Han, a Mathpresso advisor, and his colleagues discovered that AI learning apps like QANDA can help K–12 kids bridge the learning loss gap, particularly if there is an urgent goal, such as completing a college placement exam.
Han does, however, note that other issues would affect education in the future in addition to the pandemic. Yes, a new pandemic may require preparation, but there is also the possibility of natural disasters, such as hurricanes, which could force the cancellation of lessons, as Hurricane Ian recently did for families in Florida.
Then there is educational equity. Han explains the benefits that AI-powered learning apps provide for both students and enterprises.
Question: Why are AI-based apps more successful than, say, a tutor, at bridging the learning loss gap?
As long as students have internet access, AI-based learning apps offer student-tailored instructional content at an affordable price, with a few screen touches from their convenient places, without interruptions, at their own pace, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The advantages of learning apps with AI-powered technology can be summed up in five different ways. Affordability (cost-saving), actionability (less time/effort needed), accommodability (tailored experience), assurance (reliability and consistency in service), and accessibility (accessible) are the first four criteria (greater reach to educational resources).
In addition to the aforementioned five “As,” for some student groups AI-based learning apps are more beneficial from an efficacy and experiential perspective. For instance, when Gen Z interacts with AI technology, they learn not only more efficiently but also (more enjoyable). AI-based learning apps are crucial in the sense that they replace the current learning app, especially for students with limited resources who cannot afford private tutors or who reside in rural areas with limited access to tutors or test-prep facilities.
Question: Does this research imply that, whether or not there is a pandemic, AI-based apps will be crucial for everyday learning?
Yes, both at ASU and other campuses, we observe this. The pandemic has accelerated and altered the landscape of many businesses, including the education sector, both in terms of hybrid working and hybrid learning.
Question: The epidemic won’t be the last factor to disrupt education, I’m sure. How can technology benefit both the educational sector and business?
Pandemics and other natural calamities disrupt students’ education and have serious negative effects on the economy and society. Our research demonstrates that learning apps with AI capabilities can be crucial in preventing learning loss in such challenging circumstances. Our analysis has repercussions for both corporations and decision-makers in government and administration. The double bottom line of financial and social goals will be more easily attained for investors if they invest in edtech companies. AI should be taken seriously as the next step in leveling the playing field through increasing educational equity by legislators and administrators.
