Two weeks of intense turmoil have surrounded the first World Cup to be held by an Arab country. It has been a daily whirlwind of surprises and vertiginous climaxes.
Ronaldo | Rewriting More Firsts
When Cristiano Ronaldo converted a penalty in Portugal’s 3-2 victory over Group H foe Ghana, he became the first player to score at five different World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022). On November 24, Ronaldo became 37 years and 292 days old and became the oldest player to score for Portugal in a World Cup game. Being 21 years and 132 days old when he scored for his country in the 2006 World Cup, he also holds the record for being the youngest.
Gavi | Spain’s Youthful History Maker
9th-ranked Spain When his nation thrashed Costa Rica 7-0 in their tournament opener, Gavi became the first player born in 2004 to score in Qatar. Spain had never scored more goals in a single World Cup game than they did in that triumph.
Lionel Messi | Argentina’s Record-Breaker
After scoring a penalty in a defeat to Saudi Arabia in the opening round, Lionel Messi made history by becoming the first player to score for Argentina in four World Cups (2006, 2014, 2018 and 2022). He surpasses his countrymen Gabriel Batistuta (1994, 1998, and 2002), who also scored in three tournaments, and Diego Maradona (1982, 1986, and 1994), who both did so. His 92nd goal scored while wearing an Argentine jersey.
Olivier Giroud | France’s All-Time Top Scorer
With his two goals in France’s opening 4-1 victory over Australia, Giroud, 36, has now tied Thierry Henry for the nation’s all-time goal-scoring mark (51).
Saudi Arabia snap Argentina win streak: Argentina was one of the favorites to win the entire tournament when they arrived in Qatar with a perfect 36-game record. The tournament’s second-lowest-ranked team, Saudi Arabia, knocked down Argentina 2-1 to end that streak.
Inaki and Nico Williams | Sibling Revelry: On November 24, Inaki Williams of Ghana and Nico Williams of Spain became the first brothers to represent different nations at the World Cup.
Qatar | A humbling first for Cup hosts: There are two types of record-keeping: the good and the bad. Unfortunately for the hosts, Qatar, they may not want to boast too much about the first they achieved. Qatar became the first World Cup host nation to lose in the first round after losing their opening match 0–2 to Ecuador.
Wayne Hennessey | First red in Qatar, third ever for a goalkeeper: Following his collision with Iran’s Mehdi Taremi, Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey became the first player at 2018 World Cup to get a red card. The card displayed was originally a yellow card before being changed to a red one. Hennessey is the third goalie to receive a red card during a World Cup.
Enner Valenica becomes only the fourth man in history to score six World Cup goals in a row for Ecuador: Enner The goal Valencia scored for Ecuador against the Netherlands was his sixth consecutive World Cup goal; no other Ecuadorian player had scored in that time. 2014 World Cup group stage goals for Ecuador were all scored by Valencia. The South American team did not earn a spot in Russia for the 2018 competition. The 33-year-old joins a limited group that includes the legendary Portuguese player Eusebio in 1966, Paolo Rossi of Italy in 1982, and Oleg Salenko of Russia in 1994.
Lewandowski finally ends World Cup drought: After scoring his first World Cup goal in Poland’s 2-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, Robert Lewandowski broke down in tears. With eight minutes left to play, the Barcelona striker doubled his team’s lead and sealed victory, and he was unable to contain his emotions. The 34-year-old missed a penalty in his team’s opening Group C match against Mexico, ending a goalless scoring streak of five World Cup games. Lewandowski has now scored more than 600 goals in his career and matched Pele’s record of 77 goals in international play.
Fastest goal in this World Cup: At the men’s World Cup, Alphonso Davies scored Canada’s first-ever goal. The 2022 World Cup record for the quickest goal was set by Davies’ strike in the second minute of play, 68 seconds after the start of the game. Since Clint Dempsey’s goal against Ghana in 2014, it was the quickest goal in a World Cup group stage game.
An unusual first: No team won all three group games for the first time in the history of the 32-team World Cup. Four teams did it in 2014, three in 2013, two in 2010, four in 2006, two in 2002, and two in 1998.
Africa’s Cup of joy: The first African team to triumph in its group this century was Morocco. In the knockout rounds, Senegal joined them.
Super subs strike it hot: 48 group stage games featured 48 goals scored by substitutes. Intriguingly, South Korea advanced to the round of 16 after substitute Hee-Chan Hwang scored the game-winning goal in the 91st minute to defeat Portugal 2-1.
